Rwanda genocide court: 30 years for ex-army chief
Legal World News | 2011/05/17 09:13
A court has sentenced Rwanda's former army chief to 30 years in prison for ordering killings during the 1994 genocide.

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda sentenced Maj. Gen. Augustin Bizimungu on Tuesday along with three other top officers.

Presiding Judge Asoka de Silva said Bizimungu was responsible for the conduct of his subordinates.

The indictment against Bizimungu says he gave an order "to exterminate the small cockroaches" on the first day of the genocide.

At least 500,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered during the 100-day genocide in 1994. Bizimungu was captured in Angola in 2002.

International court to seek Libya arrest warrants
Legal World News | 2011/05/13 14:22
An international prosecutor said Friday he will seek arrest warrants next week for three top Libyan leaders on charges of murder and persecution during their attempts to crush the uprising against Moammar Gadhafi's regime.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, did not release the names of the suspects, but Gadhafi himself is expected to be among them.

Moreno-Ocampo revealed broad details of his investigation last week to the U.N. Security Council, but the announcement was the first time the court specified the charges — murder and persecution, considered crimes against humanity under the Geneva Conventions.

Prosecutors say their investigation has identified "three individuals who appear to bear the greatest responsibility for crimes against humanity" committed in Libya since Feb. 15, when Gadhafi's forces began a brutal crackdown on anti-government rebels.

A panel of judges will review the prosecutor's evidence before deciding whether to issue the warrants. It is not clear how long the judges will take before reaching a decision.

Court rules Pakistan's president can't lead party
Legal World News | 2011/05/12 09:20

A top Pakistani court has ruled that President Asif Ali Zardari must relinquish his position as chief of the country's ruling party.

The Lahore High Court ruled on Thursday on a petition filed by a lawyer who had argued that Pakistan's constitution prohibits the president to also head a political party.

A spokeswoman for Zardari says she had not seen the ruling and declined comment.

It's unclear what impact the ruling will have, but it will likely to put Zardari on the defensive. His Pakistan's People's Party is seen as very unpopular and has struggled to keep its ruling coalition intact.

Zardari could ignore the ruling or appeal it, which could stretch out the proceedings for many more months.

Austrian court OK's extradition of Croatian ex-PM
Legal World News | 2011/05/10 09:09

An Austrian court on Monday approved the extradition of former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader to his homeland, where he is suspected of corruption while in office, but his lawyer immediately announced an appeal.

Austrian police detained Sanader on Dec. 10 after Croatian authorities issued an international arrest warrant for him, and he has been jailed in Salzburg ever since.

During a closed-door session Monday in Salzburg, a judge ruled that Sanader's extradition was permissible, Salzburg Court president Hans Rathgeb told The Associated Press. However, the 57-year-old will remain in Austrian custody until a court in Linz decides to either grant or reject the extradition appeal, he added.

Sanader, who was in power for six years until he abruptly resigned on July 1, 2009, has proclaimed his innocence in any abuse of office claims. He alleges the charges against him are politically motivated and designed to keep him from returning to high office.

Sanader's lawyer, Werner Suppan, claimed his client would not receive a fair trial in Croatia, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Anti-gay lawsuit dismissed in Croatian soccer
Legal World News | 2011/05/05 09:14
A court has dismissed one of two cases against the president of Croatia's soccer federation because of his anti-gay comments.

Vlatko Markovic said last year no gay player will be part of the Croatian national team on his watch because "only healthy people play football."

A spokesman for the Zagreb county court said Thursday that a judge rejected one of the cases against Markovic this week. The hearing for the second suit is in June. The two cases have been filed by separate gay rights groups.

European soccer's ruling body has also opened a case against Markovic. He was re-elected to a fourth term as federation president in December.

Court: Remove Mubarak name from public facilities
Legal World News | 2011/04/21 11:46

An Egyptian court on Thursday ordered the name of ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his wife Suzanne removed from all public facilities and institutions — the latest step in dismantling the legacy of the former leader's 29 years in power.

The ruling will affect hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of subway stations, schools, streets, squares and libraries across the nation that over the years bore the name of the former leader or his wife.

In announcing the ruling, Judge Mohammed Hassan Omar said "people have uncovered Mubarak's journey of corruption that began at a parade stand and ended at Tahrir square."

He was referring to the assassination of Mubarak's predecessor Anwar Sadat in October 1981.

With Mubarak, then vice president, seated next to him, Sadat was shot dead by Muslim radicals while reviewing a military parade. Days later, Mubarak became president after a nationwide referendum in which he was the only candidate.

Tahrir square in central Cairo was the epicenter of the revolt against Mubarak, where masses converged daily for 18 days of protests that eventually toppled the president. Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11.

"It has become clear that the size of the corruption (under Mubarak) that's being uncovered every day exceeds by far anyone's imagination," said the judge.
