Man who tried to fake death pleads guilty to fraud
Criminal Law Updates | 2010/09/16 15:31

An Indiana money manager who once led a high-flying lifestyle pleaded guilty to five securities fraud counts on Wednesday, nearly two years after he tried to fake his death in a Florida plane crash to escape the crush of financial and personal problems.

Marcus Schrenker, 39, admitted the charges in a plea agreement under which he agreed to a 10-year prison sentence and prosecutors dropped four other charges. He also agreed to pay more than $600,000 in restitution. Prosecutors say he bilked friends, family members and other investors of more than $1 million.

He will remain in jail until his Oct. 7 sentencing, when Hamilton Superior Court Judge Steven Nation is expected to rule whether Schrenker serves the sentence at the same time as a federal sentence or afterward.

Schrenker, shackled at his wrists and ankles and wearing an orange jail T-shirt emblazoned with "Inmate 453" on its back in large black letters, told Nation he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has taken medication for it since 1992.

His attorney, P. Chadwick Hill, said afterward that Schrenker didn't blame the disorder for his actions.

Defendant pleads guilty in NJ in $880M fraud case
Criminal Law Updates | 2010/09/15 12:09

A Florida man has pleaded guilty in New Jersey to running a multistate Ponzi scheme that prosecutors say left investors with about $80 million in losses.

Nevin Shapiro admitted in a Newark federal courtroom Wednesday to using Florida-based Capitol Investments USA Inc. to raise nearly $900 million from investors who thought they were buying into a wholesale grocery distribution business.

Prosecutors say Shapiro used the proceeds instead to fund a lifestyle so lavish, he has a university athletic lounge named after him.

Prosecutors say Shapiro left at least 60 investors in Florida, Indiana and New Jersey with millions in losses. He could face up to 17 years in prison.

A former Army soldier accused of taking workers hostage at a Georgia military hospital is scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court in Savannah.

Federal prosecutors charged Robert Anthony Quinones on Tuesday with assault and kidnapping in connection with the Labor Day hostage standoff at Fort Stewart. The 29-year-old suspect surrendered and no one was injured.

Quinones' initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Quinones is also charged with threatening to kill President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton. Court documents say he told investigators of his assassination plans after his arrest Monday.

Flight attendant in passenger tiff due in N.Y. court
Criminal Law Updates | 2010/09/07 10:48

A former JetBlue flight attendant accused of cursing out an airplane passenger and then sliding down an emergency exit chute is due in a New York City courtroom.

Steven Slater is scheduled to appear today for a routine hearing on criminal-mischief charges.

Share Slater also was charged with reckless endangerment and trespassing after last month's meltdown aboard a JetBlue Airways Corp. flight from Pittsburgh that had just landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. His lawyer has said the passenger's "lack of civility" prompted his behavior.

Defense attorney Daniel J. Horwitz says Slater is looking forward to his day in court.  Slater became water cooler talk for days after his Aug. 9 meltdown. Online groups canonized him as a hero or vilified him as a cranky brat.

New Jersey man pleads guilty to trade secret theft
Criminal Law Updates | 2010/09/02 09:46

A New Jersey man who was a chemist for a suburban Chicago-based paint company has pleaded guilty to stealing trade secrets.

Federal prosecutors say 54-year-old David Yen Lee of Jersey City, N.J., pleaded guilty Wednesday. They say he admits to stealing formulas and information that was valued at up to $20 million. He formerly was a technical director at Valspar Corp.

Prosecutors say Lee stole the information from Valspar as he was preparing to work for a competitor in China. Lee formerly lived in Arlington Heights. Federal officials say he stole secret formulas for paints and coatings from Valspar's offices in Wheeling.

Ohio parents plead guilty to hog-tying young son
Criminal Law Updates | 2010/08/31 11:04

The parents of a Cleveland boy have pleaded guilty to hog-tying and duct-taping him to a coffee table on a nightly basis for months.

Thirty-seven-year-old Andreia Huffman and 32-year-old Jason Dunikowski of Cleveland pleaded guilty Monday to a 196-count indictment. Charges include 180 kidnapping counts, child endangering and, against the mother, felonious assault.

The prosecutor has recommended a 17-year sentence for the mother and 15 years for the father.

Along with the nightly confinement, the couple admitted punishing the 8-year-old boy for six months by forcing him to stand all day facing a wall and smacking the back of his head until his nose broke.

His 15-year-old brother called police in April.

Messages seeking comment were left Monday with the couple's attorneys.
