NY firm buys RI's WLNE-TV for $4 million

A Bronxville, N.Y.-based broadcasting company is buying a struggling affiliate of the ABC broadcast network in Rhode Island for $4 million. A Superior Court judge in Providence approved the bid by Citadel Communications LLC to buy WLNE-TV on Tuesday because it was the only bidder that had struck an affiliation agreement with ABC. The station's expired affiliate agreement had been extended to April 1. Court-appointed receiver Matthew McGowan says the deal with ABC was decisive because ABC could yank its signal. Three bidders who had not reached a deal with ABC were required to put the money upfront and competitively bid for the station, but they declined to do so. Global paid $14 million for WLNE-TV in 2007. The firm went into receivership in 2010. Owner Kevin O'Brien did not respond to a call for comment. |

Firm, committee move to quash Clemens subpoena

The law firm and the congressional committee that investigated drugs in baseball are fighting pitching standout Roger Clemens over access to evidence collected against him, a development that could delay the trial on charges he lied about being a user. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the firm that produced the Mitchell Report filed motions in federal court in Washington on Friday to quash Clemens' subpoenas. Clemens wants to see their evidence accusing him of using steroids and human growth hormone, likely looking for weaknesses or inconsistencies in witness testimony to defend himself in the criminal trial scheduled for July. In 2006, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig hired former Sen. George Mitchell and the DLA Piper firm he worked for at the time to investigate allegations that players used drugs. The Mitchell Report issued Dec. 13, 2007, accused several players including Clemens. The House committee held hearings on the report in February 2008. Clemens testified that he never used performance-enhancing drugs during 23 seasons, in which he recorded 354 wins and 4,672 strikeouts and won seven Cy Young awards. Prosecutors say evidence proves that he did and charged him with perjury, false statement and obstruction of Congress. Clemens wants DLA Piper to turn over material related to its interviews with his longtime personal trainer Brian McNamee, who told investigators he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs; admitted steroid user and retired player Jose Canseco; and former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, who McNamee said provided the drugs Clemens used. |

Rep. Pomeroy joining DC law firm as health adviser
Law Firm News |

North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy, who was defeated in his campaign for a 10th term, said he will join a Washington, D.C., law firm next week as an attorney and adviser on health policy. Alston & Bird, which has more than 800 lawyers, said Tuesday it had hired the veteran Democrat and his House chief of staff, Bob Siggins, to work for its health care group. Federal law bars Pomeroy from lobbying Congress for a year. Pomeroy said he may do lobbying work once the prohibition is lifted. He said he doesn't believe he will be asked to advocate policies he opposed as a member of Congress or to represent clients who worked to turn him out of office. Republican Rick Berg, a Fargo property developer and former North Dakota state legislator, defeated Pomeroy in November. "I want the work that I do in health policy to be consistent with trying to make a better health care system," Pomeroy said. "I have received assurances from the firm that I won't be asked to work on something that I fundamentally don't agree with. . No, I don't intend to sell out." Pomeroy, who was North Dakota's insurance commissioner for eight years before being elected to the U.S. House in 1992, said he was hired because of his knowledge of insurance, health policy and the workings of Congress. |
